Re: AIRLIE MAIN STREET REDEVELOPMENT: OBJECTION TO LAND SWAP

WRC is conducting a survey via their website asking members of our community to choose between two options for the central section of the Airlie Beach Main Street. One of these requires your approval to swap public land for adjacent private land.

The community is being asked to make this important choice without being given unbiased and truthful information.

Survey shortcomings:

  • Neither of these options have been seen by our community prior to this survey
  • Only aerial diagrams are offered for comparison
  • Introduction fails to acknowledge the public land
  • Introduction fails to acknowledge implications of its zoning as a reserve for public open space and parkland
  • The brief pros and cons listed for both options are biased and misleading
  • Detailed and important information has not been made available
  • The survey has no independent auditor and is therefore open to manipulation.

Considering these shortcomings it is highly unlikely our community will be able to make full and informed choices or that this survey will be seen as credible.

THEREFORE: As a Whitsunday resident and/or ratepayer I/we wish to advise:

  • my/our objection to your department approving a land swap of any portion of the public open space adjacent to the Airlie Beach lagoon currently used as temporary carpark, if such land swap is to be used to facilitate the relocation of a privately owned commercial property.

Such relocation will:

  • Severely fragment this public open space
  • Reduce its capacity for public and community use for recreation,
  • Prevent the holding of large community and commercial events
  • Prevent provision of public infrastructure, such as Bowen’s planned foreshore water park for children
  • Such approval would be:

    • Contrary to Most Appropriate Use (MAU) legislation.
    • Contrary to the Policies and Guiding principles of the Land Act
    • Contrary to Whitsunday Town Plan building lines
    • Set a precedent for adjacent land owners to apply for use of this public land

Unfortunately until this particular land swap proposal has been refused by your department it will be used by vested interests as an excuse to delay the Airlie Beach Main Street redevelopment which overall concept I/we approve and wish to see commenced as soon as possible

I/we respectfully request that you act immediately to advise the relevant authorities that your department will not approve any such land swap proposal.

    Yours sincerely,

Re: AIRLIE MAIN STREET REDEVELOPMENT: OBJECTION TO LAND SWAP

As a person who has holidayed in Airlie Beach several/many times, I/we wish to advise:

    • Reduce its capacity for public and community use for recreation,
    • Prevent the holding of large community and commercial events
    • Prevent provision of public infrastructure, such as Bowen’s planned foreshore water park for children
    • Severely damage Airlie Beach as a holiday location,
    • Compromise one of the reasons visitors decide to visit Airlie Beach
    • Significantly reduce the quality of visitor experience

    Such approval would be:

    • Contrary to Most Appropriate Use (MAU) legislation.
    • Contrary to the Policies and Guiding principles of the Land Act
