Shute Harbour Petition
We, the undersigned, request that the Queensland State Government act immediately to reject all current and future applications to develop or infill Shute Harbour's undeveloped foreshore and its World Heritage seabed. The current proposal for a large marina, substantial, multi-storey residential and resort buildings and loss of public land and waterway, flies in the face of local, state and federal legislation. It also offers unnecessary infrastructure in a region already oversupplied with marine facilities.
This delicate, shallow-water and foreshore environment plays host to endangered species and must be protected. The predicted level of human activity to accompany further development of this area would be disastrous in ecological and aesthetic terms, seriously damaging the lucrative Whitsunday tourism industry and the environment upon which it depends. We believe that any development at Shute Harbour should be within the current footprint, be kept to a limit of two storeys and be for purposes appropriate to current usage only.
